Description

Isopon Zinc 182 Rust Inhibiting Primer – Grey

Isopon Zinc 182 is a high-performance anti-rust primer designed to stop corrosion in its tracks and provide a tough, long-lasting base for paint. Packed with zinc for superior protection, it’s ideal for use on cars, trailers, agricultural equipment, metal gates, railings and general steelwork where rust is a problem.

Engineered by U-POL’s Isopon range, Zinc 182 chemically inhibits rust formation and adheres strongly to bare metal, previously painted surfaces and even lightly rusted steel (once properly prepared). It can be over-painted with most topcoats, making it a versatile solution for both DIY users and professionals.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Powerful rust inhibition
Formulated with active zinc pigments that help prevent corrosion and stop rust from spreading underneath the paint film.

  • Excellent adhesion to metal
Designed for bare steel and lightly rusted surfaces, providing a solid, long-lasting key for topcoats.

  • Durable, hard-wearing base
Once cured, Zinc 182 forms a tough, chip-resistant coating that withstands everyday knocks, road grime and weather exposure.

  • Compatible with most paint systems
Can be overcoated with cellulose, acrylic, synthetic and 2K paints (check system compatibility on a small area first).

  • Fast drying
Touch-dry typically within 20–30 minutes (depending on film thickness, temperature and airflow), helping speed up your repair process.

  • Ideal for automotive and general use
Suitable for bodywork repairs, chassis, panels, trailers, machinery, garden furniture, gates and railings.

Typical Uses

  • Automotive body panels and repair areas

  • Chassis, sills and underbody components (when top-coated appropriately)

  • Metal gates, railings and garden structures

  • Agricultural and construction equipment

  • General steelwork in workshops, garages and sheds

Surface Preparation

  1. Clean – Remove all dirt, grease, oil, wax and road film with a suitable degreaser.

  2. Remove loose rust & paint – Wire brush, sand or grind to remove loose/flaky rust and old paint.

  3. Feather edges – Sand surrounding paint to a smooth feathered edge for a seamless repair.

  4. Dry & dust-free – Ensure the surface is completely dry and free from dust before priming.

Proper preparation is essential for maximum adhesion and rust protection.

Application (Aerosol Version)

  1. Shake well – Shake the can vigorously for at least 2 minutes after the mixing ball begins to rattle.

  2. Test spray – Try on a scrap surface to check spray pattern and compatibility.

  3. Spray distance – Hold 20–30 cm from the surface.

  4. Apply light coats – Use several light, even coats rather than one heavy coat to avoid runs and ensure even coverage.

  5. Flash-off time – Allow a few minutes between coats as per can instructions.

  6. Drying time – Touch-dry typically within 20–30 minutes; allow recommended time before sanding or over-coating.

Overcoating

  • Ensure the primer is fully dry before applying topcoat.

  • Can be over-painted with most solvent-based and 2K automotive paints.

  • For best results, lightly sand with fine abrasive (e.g. P400–P600) and remove dust before top-coating.

Coverage & Sizes

Isopon Zinc 182 is available in a range of sizes, commonly including:

  • 500ml aerosol – ideal for quick repairs and hard-to-reach areas

  • 250ml, 1L and 2.5L tins – suited to larger panels, gates, trailers and machinery

Approximate coverage and exact sizes vary by pack – see product label or your chosen size for specific details.

Colour & Finish

  • Colour: Grey

  • Finish: Matt/low sheen primer finish, designed to be overcoated – not a final topcoat.

Suitable Substrates

  • Bare steel and iron

  • Lightly rusted steel (properly prepared)

  • Previously painted metal (sound, well-keyed coatings)

Not recommended for galvanised steel, aluminium or non-metallic substrates unless specifically pre-treated with an appropriate etch or adhesion promoter.

Safety & Handling

  • Use only in a well-ventilated area.

  • Avoid breathing spray/mist – consider using suitable respiratory protection.

  • Wear gloves and eye protection to avoid skin and eye contact.

  • Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames – aerosol is highly flammable.
