Description
Zinsser Bulls Eye® 1-2-3 Primer Sealer (Water-Based) is a high-performance, multi-purpose primer designed to give excellent adhesion and a uniform base coat on a wide range of interior and exterior surfaces. It’s a go-to “problem solver” primer for everyday decorating jobs because it sticks well, dries quickly, and helps your topcoat look cleaner and more even.
What it does
-
Strong adhesion to difficult surfaces – helps paint bond to glossy or hard-to-paint areas so your finish coat lasts longer.
-
Seals porous surfaces – reduces patchiness and “flashing” (uneven sheen) on plaster, drywall, filler, and repaired areas.
-
Blocks and isolates mild stains – helps lock in everyday marks and light staining so they don’t bleed through your finish.
-
Creates a uniform base coat – improves colour coverage and can reduce the number of topcoats needed.
Where you can use it
Suitable for interior and exterior priming on many common surfaces, including:
-
Plaster, drywall, skim coat & filler repairs
-
Wood (softwood, hardwood, MDF)
-
Brick, masonry, concrete (sound, clean, and properly cured)
-
Previously painted surfaces
-
Non-ferrous metals (e.g., aluminium, galvanised steel—best results with proper cleaning/degreasing)
Ideal applications
-
Priming new plaster/drywall before emulsion or satin
-
Locking down and evening out patched walls and spot-repaired areas
-
Undercoating woodwork before water-based or solvent-based topcoats
-
Providing grip on glossy paint after proper keying/sanding
-
Refreshing weathered exterior surfaces before repainting
Key features & benefits
-
Water-based / low odour – easier, more pleasant application indoors
-
Fast drying – helps you move from prep to topcoat quickly
-
Excellent grip – reduces peeling and flaking when used on properly prepared surfaces
-
Smooth finish – sands well once dry for a tidy professional look
-
Versatile topcoat compatibility – works under many common decorative paints
Application tips (for best results)
-
Prep is everything: clean off grease, soap residue, chalking, loose paint, and dust. Lightly abrade glossy surfaces for maximum bite.
-
Porous surfaces: on very porous plaster or masonry, apply a suitable first coat method (or an appropriate sealer approach) to avoid over-absorption and patchiness.
-
Stain severity: for heavy water stains, nicotine, or strong tannin bleed, a dedicated stain-blocking primer may be a better choice.
-
Application methods: brush, roller, or spray. Apply even coats—don’t overwork it.
-
Drying/recoat: allow to dry fully before sanding or topcoating; colder/damper conditions extend drying time.
Finish coat results
Once cured and topcoated, Bulls Eye 1-2-3 helps produce a more even colour, better durability, and improved adhesion, especially on mixed substrates (old paint + filler + bare patches), where uneven absorption can otherwise ruin the final look.
